Tag Management Tips & Tricks – On-Click Event Tracking Configuration with GTM

There are a number of situations in which you need to trigger a tag or fire an event when a user interacts with a button on your website. This could be a form submission, login action, add to cart, etc. Without an event pushed to the data layer when a user completes the given action, it is necessary to trigger the tags by listening for the specific element on the page being interacted with.

At first glance, having to identify the proper element that is triggering the form submission or page-event can seem like a very difficult process. This process involves digging into the browser’s development tools, identifying the elements, and then guessing and checking to make sure you’re on the right Class, ID, Name, etc.

However, there is a much easier way! We can use functionality within GTM, and its Preview Mode, to identify what we need to be listening for and then create the triggers around these items very quickly. Here we take you through the entire process for creating these triggers and provide an example of configuring an event in Google Analytics for a user clicking to “Log In” on a site.
